Fundraiser Background:
The Welsh govt have recently given permission for expansion of the Craig yr Hesg quarry near the village of Glyncoch owned by Heidelberg Materials - after plans were rejected twice - on land which should historically be common land. Residents are already experienceing health issues relating to dust, and cracks in the walls of their homes with the quarry as it is, and the proposed expension would bring the quarry right to the edge of the village.
Heidelberg Materials operate quarries on stolen, occupied land in the West Bank that export their materials directly to Israel with no benefit to Palestinian communities. They have also opened quarries in Indonesia on indigenous land, displacing local occupants and causing major environmental harm. We feel that the expansion of their quarry at Craig yr Hesg reflects this colonial attitude, and the continued exploitation of Welsh resources and communities by companies that have no interest in our country. The Rondda Cynon Taff in of South Wales is one of the most deprived areas in Wales according to the Office for National Statistics, and the rate of child poverty in the village of Glyncoch next to the quarry is a staggering 63%. We feel that the quarry expansion is delibarately targeting a community they think will not have the means to fight back.
Funds raised at this gig will go towards covering any legal costs incurred by the protestors, and we will be asking for petition signatures on the door.
